Will Samsung BlackBerry übernehmen?

Bedeutungslos? Mitnichten. Ganz im Gegenteil. Vor allem wohl deswegen:

QNX:

ZDNet (11.03.2014): BlackBerry's QNX: Why it's so valuable to Apple, Google, auto industry
For smartphone giants looking to take their experiences to auto dashboards, all roads at least tie into BlackBerry's QNX platform. Here's why.

Financial Post (03.03.2014): Apple Inc CarPlay brings iPhone features to GM, BMW, Ford and other car dashboards

The big question is what is QNX worth? BlackBerry can't base its entire turnaround on QNX, but rest a assured the car platform will play a key role. Strategically, QNX---along with the enterprise unit---may be the most valuable things at BlackBerry.
In many respects, QNX serves as a middleware layer for in-car infotainment. News surfaced last week that Apple's CarPlay, which launched with iOS 7.1 on Monday, was based on QNX.

Apple CarPlay is an in-car infotainment system that allows iPhone users to make calls, access maps, message, and listen to music. Apple has listed 15 auto manufacturer partners including Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. The CarPlay software is powered on BlackBerry's QNX platform. CarPlay will be available in select cars in 2014.

When you look at CarPlay you'd never know QNX is there.

QNX is the market leader in operating system platforms for automotive infotainment systems, with a market share above 50%, according to data from market research firm IHS Automotive, and the company counts Apple among its clients.

“Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles,” said Paul Leroux, a spokesman for QNX Software Systems.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support for Apple CarPlay.”

QNX provides its operating system platform technology to many of the world’s largest auto makers, including those working with Apple on CarPlay, such as Ford, BMW, Honda, General Motors, and Toyota.

QNX =D
