Having dual versions of iTunes (4.0 and 4.0.1) installed to retain sharing

With the recent debate regarding Apple's decision to strip sharing capabilities from the iTunes 4.0.1 release (see the margin note below), some users have been experimenting with a full iTunes 4.01 installation, in addition to retaining the older 4.0 release.

MacFixIt reader Brian Scarborough writes:

"A good friend of mine has done this, and he uses iTunes 4.01 for home listening and encoding, then quits and switches to iTunes 4.0 to listen to his stream at work. It should be noted that he did have problems with sound in iTunes 4.0 on a Qucksilver dual gig machine. I have not had sound problems on my 17" 1GHz iMac, though I have turned off all effects. He tells me that both programs will co-exist peacefully, using the same library, as long as they are not run simultaneously."

We are still investigating an potential conflict issues with this set-up, but have found no problems running the two applications separately - but not simultaneously - in-house.
