So wie es aussieht, gibt es mit macOS 10.12 jetzt auch ein neues Dateisystem.

Apple Developer: Apple File System Guide
Ein paar sehr geile Schmankerl sind da drin, auf die lange gewartet wurde (und die man sich von ZFS abgeschaut hat), TimeMachine wird abheben dadurch (vor allem bzgl. Kopieren, Clonen) und dadurch erst so richtig gewürdigt werden können, verschiedene bisher verwendete Krücken fallen weg.

An open source implementation is not available at this time. Apple plans to document and publish the APFS volume format when Apple File System is released in 2017.
Current Limitations
As a developer preview of this technology, there are currently several limitations:
Startup Disk: APFS volumes cannot currently be used as a startup disk.
Case Sensitivity: Filenames are currently case-sensitive only.
Time Machine: Time Machine backups are not currently supported.
FileVault: APFS volumes cannot currently be encrypted using FileVault.
Fusion Drive: Fusion Drives cannot currently use APFS.

Offenbar muss sich Apple selber erstmal an den neuen Namen macOS gewöhnen. Und das dann überall konsequent durchziehen. Ist ja auch erstmal eine erste Developer-Doku. Und überschrieben mit
"Important: This documentation contains preliminary information about an API or technology in development. This information is subject to change, and software implemented according to this documentation should be tested with final operating system software."
Die Doku wird sich also sicher noch an der einen oder anderen Stelle ändern.
