We are now starting to see indications of more USB-C devices on the market that you would connect to a hub – external hard drives, media card readers, some flash drives. But the number of devices that use the USB-A port (keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, external hard drives, flash drives, etc) still far outweigh the C devices.
Many devices such as keyboard and mouse would not benefit greatly from being USB-C. Users want to extend the life of their traditional USB-A devices longer, and with USB-A all but disappearing on many laptops (e.g. MacBook Pro), there is still stronger demand for more Type A support downstream.
Having said that, the future direction is toward releasing more USB hubs with higher downstream USB-C port counts for 2019. Having hubs with more USB-C ports will tie in better with the next generation (2nd Generation, also known as USB 3.1) of USB-C which supports 10GBps bandwidth vs present majority of USB-C being Gen 1 5Gps (USB 3.0).
With 10G, there will be more bandwidth available to the usb ports which will benefit data transfer to multiple C-based external hard drives where it is more important. For charging, there are more USB-C based mobile/smartphone devices emerging supporting C port so will start to see inclusion of dedicated or shared charge/sync C port on hubs in the future. Most single users will only require one USB-C port to charge as most will only have one mobile device to fast charge (excluding laptops here which require power delivery charging).
